Lately I have been really enamored with the beautiful watercolor pieces I see online. The soft hues just call out to me and make my heart sing! I wanted to try my hand at this but before I spent the cash on a nice set of watercolors, I thought I would break out my Cretacolor Aqua Monolith woodless watercolor pencils and test the waters. (pun intended 😉 )
I decided to start with something simple like a wreath. This way I could see how the pencils work with something that I am familiar and comfortable drawing. Here, you can see the original pencil drawing and then the beginnings of me adding water to it. Already you can see the wreath filling out and taking shape.
Next, I went over once more with my paintbrush and added some more water. I also added a couple of vines with the charcoal to add some dimension in color.
Lastly, I used a very light tan/blush to add a bit of color to the center before I added my lettering. This way it wouldn’t be on such a stark white background. This really softened the look quite a bit.
And here is the finished piece! Granted, I have a long way to go before my watercolors are something to marvel at, but I am happy with this first little test run. Any tips or tricks for watercolor newbies? Please let me know in the comments!
